Ricardo have developed an advanced single cylinder research engine based on the production 1.6L Ford EcoBoost GDI engine (79mm bore, 81.4mm stroke capable of running to 6000rpm) specifically for universities.
Key systems transferred directly from the production engine including:
- The cylinder head and valve train with twin independent variable camshaft timing
- The high pressure fuel system with pump, rail and injectors
- The intake manifold with electronic throttle body
- The piston, connecting rod and timing drive arrangement
As standard the package also provides an open ECU, laptop with controller software, wiring harness and on engine sensors. For academia institutions the laptop comes with a Ricardo WAVE licence (node locked) and a validated model of the engine which allows students to build, validate and develop a 1D engine and gas dynamics model that can be trialled in real time on the test bed.
Optional high speed data logging instrumentation such as a crank nose encoder, in cylinder pressure sensor and high pressure fuel rail sensor can be added. Ricardo can also provide a turn key solution for a test bed facility.
