A three-step process that facilitates knowledge exchange and rapid decision making

What is a Ricardo Rapid Innovation Workshop?

An RRI workshop is a structured, one-day, three-step workshop-focused process that facilitates knowledge exchange and rapid decision making.

Why should you invest in an RRI workshop?

Organisations can struggle to make decisions, particularly at the front end of innovation, where many potential directions exist. Ricardo Rapid Innovation Workshops can help your organization to:

  • Decide on its R&D direction
  • Generate ideas for new products and services
  • Investigate high-level engineering and technology problems and opportunity spaces

The workshops provide sufficient analysis to enable clear directions going forward. Example topic areas for RRI Workshops include:

  • CO2-reduction approaches
  • New materials for lightweighting vehicles
  • Emissions reduction (e.g. NOx)

How does the process work?

  • We make sure that participants understand the question, background, and your capabilities
  • We frame the workshop by establishing criteria for both idea generation and selection
  • We explore tens of ideas, make connections, and rapidly evaluate and develop opportunity areas or solutions
  • Our standardised workshop format means all decisions makers, stakeholders, and technical experts – from your organisation and Ricardo – are in the same room at the same time

Workshops follow a standard, three-step process:

Step 1: Understand capabilities, needs, and the application space

  • Prior to the workshop, Ricardo will create an RRI Workbook providing background information and a full process overview
  • The workshop will start with a brief knowledge sharing session (e.g. background presentations to understand organisational capabilities)

Step 2: Structured brainstorming

  • This step involves a facilitated brainstorming process, in which participants identify potential opportunity areas or solutions to issues
  • Participants complete standard worksheets and present their ideas to the group
  • A Ricardo scribe will ensure that all workshop ideas are captured
  • This stage also includes a Refinement phase, where participants group overlapping ideas, refine descriptions, and create potential opportunity ideas

Step 3: Ranking and selection

  • Workshop participants rank final opportunity areas versus selection criteria agreed prior to the workshop
  • A voting process is used to assist the final selection of opportunity areas
