It is generally accepted that the introduction of Automated Vehicles can significantly reduce the number of road traffic accidents. However, one of the key difficulties for the transition towards automated vehicles lies in proving that the technology is safe to be used in a public environment. This raises questions about the full extent of the situations an autonomous vehicles will encounter, and whether we can be sure we do not overlook any situations these vehicles cannot handle.
This paper presents a common approach for the homologation of safety for automated transport systems, for a large variety of applications ranging from automated cargo carriers on a dedicated track to driverless public transport onto public road. The homologation process described in this paper is characterised by structuring functional safety evidence into a safety case, according to the currently voluntary standards ISO 26262 and EN 50129.
